How to prepare

Perform an enema (Fleet® or similar) 1 to 2 hours before the exam to clean the anal canal.
No Fasting
Fasting is not required. You may eat normally before the exam.
Clothing
Wear comfortable clothing and pants that can be easily lowered.
Documents
Bring your medical referral and any available previous exams (pelvic ultrasound, prior manometry).
Medications
Inform staff of all medications in use, including laxatives and herbal supplements.

What is anorectal manometry?+
It’s an exam that measures the strength and coordination of the anal and rectal muscles, evaluating sphincter function at rest and during evacuation.
Does anorectal manometry hurt?+
It’s not painful, only uncomfortable during the introduction of a thin, flexible catheter into the anal canal. Most patients report good tolerance.
How long does the exam take?+
The exam takes between 30 and 45 minutes, including the assessment of resting pressure, voluntary contraction and evacuation effort.
Do I need any special preparation?+
Yes, a cleansing enema is recommended 1 to 2 hours before the exam. Fasting is not required.
What is this exam used for?+
It’s used to investigate fecal incontinence, refractory chronic constipation, pelvic floor disorders and suspected Hirschsprung’s disease.
